May 24. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Algerian authorities have once again detained prominent activist and opposition figure Karim Tabu, leader of the Democratic and Social Union (UDS) party, with no details on the reasons for his arrest, which comes nearly a year after he was detained for criticize the government on social media.

The National Committee for the Release of Detainees (CNLD) has indicated in a statement on its Facebook social network account that the opponent was detained “by people in civilian clothes who did not consider it useful to identify themselves.” The activist was arrested in Delly Brahim, in Algiers.

It has also said that Tabu himself has called his relatives to report on his place of detention, in the province of Algeria, “without specifying who carried out the arrest.” “He is detained without knowing when he will be brought before the court”, he has indicated.

Tabu has been detained on several occasions since the start in 2019 of the protests against the intention of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika to run for a fifth term despite his serious health problems, which finally led to his resignation in April of that year.

The protests, which also demanded a democratic opening in the African country, have continued after the arrival of Abdelmayid Tebune to the Presidency. Since then, the authorities have made numerous arrests of activists, opponents and journalists, which has provoked criticism from international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
