The candidate of the government’s All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has won three of the four Nigerian states whose results have been officially confirmed, although partial data suggests that he has suffered a setback in Lagos , of which he was governor on two occasions.
The Nigerian electoral commission has indicated that Tinubu has prevailed in Etiki, Kwara and Ondo, while former vice president Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), has prevailed in Osun, as reported by the Nigerian media.
However, provisional data suggests that Peter Obi, of the Labor Party, would have prevailed in the state of Lagos, the most populous in the country and the one that houses the homonymous city, the most populous on the African continent.
The victory for Obi, who is aiming to break the stranglehold of Nigeria’s two main parties, would mark the first time that a Tinubu-backed party has not prevailed in Lagos since 1999, when Nigeria’s multi-party system was reinstated.
After that, Bashir Ahmad, from the Tinubu campaign, has called for calm after the announcement of the partial results and has published a statement by the party’s candidate in which he indicates that “the fact that the ACP has lost by little Lagos State against another party should not be a reason for violence”. “As a Democrat, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” he stressed.
Likewise, Obi would have achieved victory in the Federal Capital Territory, where Abuja is located, by collecting 111,352 votes, compared to Tinubu’s 61,306 and Abubakar’s 47,792, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Premium Times’.
On the other hand, the preliminary results also give victory to Abubakar in Katsina, the state from which the outgoing president, Muhammadu Buhari, of the Tinubu APC is from.
The PDP has indicated during the last hours on its account on the social network Twitter that its candidate is on the way to prevail in the elections, despite the delays in the publication of data by the electoral commission.
In fact, the opposition party has threatened to reject the results of the presidential elections and has shown its concern with the data emanating from Kwara. Thus, Dino Melaye, from the PDP, has denounced the delays in the publication of the counts on the Internet.
