We are witnessing first-hand how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming different areas of our society, including productivity, entertainment and medicine. Andrej Karpathya founding member of OpenAI and former head of AI at Tesla, appears ready to harness the potential of algorithms in the field of education.
Through a post on Xthis prominent scientific researcher announced the creation of a company called Eureka Labs. The aim of this company is to expand education both in scope, making it possible for a large number of people to learn, and in extension, allowing people to learn a greater number of subjects than they do today.
Human teachers + AI assistants
Karpathy believes that an ideal experience for learning anything is to have a personal tutor who, in addition to being an expert in the subject, is deeply Passionate and didactic. Certainly, the way in which knowledge is imparted today is somewhat different. In other words, there is no one teacher for every student.
Eureka Labs aims to take education to the next level by breaking barriers like language. The platform aims to harness the potential of generative AI to power AI teaching assistants optimized to guide students through the course at hand. It’s what Karpathy calls a “symbiosis between teacher and AI.”
Teachers, however, will not be replaced by algorithms. According to the creator of the project, they will be in charge of designing course materialsbut they will be supported by technology to optimize the teaching process. “If we succeed, it will be easy for anyone to learn anything,” the expert said in his post.
The first step of this ambitious project will be an artificial intelligence course called LLM101n. It will aim to guide students in creating a large language model (LLM) for storytelling.
“We are going to build everything end-to-end, from the basics to a web application that works similar to ChatGPT, from scratch in Python, C and CUDAand with minimal computer science requirements. By the end, you should have a relatively deep understanding of AI, LLMs, and deep learning in general.”
It should be noted that Eureka Labs page OpenAI is still in its early stages. We will have to wait to see how the platform will work and students will have to pay a membership to access the content. As a curious fact, Karpathy not only co-founded OpenAI, but after his time at Tesla he returned to the AI company to work on GPT-4 and ChatGPT. At the carmaker run by Elon Musk, he led the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot.
