The relevance of the digital transformation for the development of LAC has been evidenced either through analysis, studies, congresses or permanent dialogue spaces, such as the Digital Agenda for Latin America and the Caribbean (eLAC). It is evident that in order to enhance the positive impact that AI can have and minimize the risks associated with it, a better understanding of the phenomenon is essential, making it urgent to have reliable and systematized information regarding the state of the art and the practice of AI. in the region. Information that will be key to the definition of public policies that promote its development.
The National AI Center of Chile, with the support of the IDB, the CAF, the OAS and the technical assistance of UNESCO and the Stanford HAI, have prepared the First Latin American Index of Artificial Intelligence, which will be published in August 2023. This index, which collects information on the current situation in three key dimensions: Enabling Factors, Research and Development, and Governance, offers a regional perspective regarding the current situation in fundamental matters for the creation of development and innovation ecosystems based on AI, the governance of this technology, the gaps between countries, and the best practices adopted by different states and organizations.
During the event, the preliminary results of the index will be presented and the need to move towards an own vision of the benefits and threats of AI, and its link with the digital transformation agendas and its productive, social and institutional impact will be discussed.
