The trailer with gameplay Unknown 9: Awakening initially takes place in the prologue, when Haroona, the protagonist (played by actress Anya Chalotra), pursues Vincent and the Ascendants, a dangerous branch of a secret society known as the Leap Year Society, with her mentor Reika, deep into the Mauritanian desert. When they reach one of their camps, Haroona uses her powers to assess the situation, sneak up on enemies, and eliminate them without causing any trouble. When she decides to engage in direct combat, our heroine brings out her catalog of skills.
Haroona is a quaestora with a connection to another dimension known as the Upside Down, a plane of existence that allows her to access powerful energy and knowledge. This sapience allows her to use melee attacks and Umbric abilities to dispose of her rivals. “Her most striking technique is occupation, which allows her to temporarily control an enemy’s body,” says Christophe Rossignol.
As the footage moves past the early stages of the game, we see Haroona facing off against more powerful enemies that require a higher level of creativity. Umbric abilities use am energy, a resource that is replenished through melee combat. There are demolition, repulsion, and pulling abilities that target ranged characters and objects. The setting should also be taken into account, as it can play a key role in both offensive and defensive phases. If you prefer stealth, there are more traditional Umbric abilities and techniques like calls that enhance this style.
The gameplay demo also shows us that Unknown 9: Awakening offers quieter exploration sequences. “Exploring levels and going off the beaten path can lead to useful discoveries,” says Christophe Rossignol. Just like in combat, Umbric abilities are useful during exploration phases.
