The idea was to learn about the work of each academic and their line of research to promote collaborative work in the future.
A first meeting of an internal nature was held by the academics of the Faculty of Sciences of the Catholic University of the Santísima Concepción (UCSC). Professors from the departments of Ecology and Environmental Chemistry carried out a dynamic that allowed them to learn in detail about their interests, lines of research and thus strengthen future collaborations.
The activity was directed by the CI2030 Science for Innovation Consortium South-Subantarctic initiative, where UCSC belongs together with 5 other study houses located from Talca to Punta Arenas (Universities of Talca, Biobío, de la Frontera, Austral de Chile, and Magellan).
Strengthen teamwork
This dynamic is of vital importance at this time, since during the last year six new academics have joined the UCSC Faculty of Sciences. An instance that Dr. Dariela Nuñez from the Department of Environmental Chemistry valued, one year after joining this house of studies. “The internal linking activity was a very good instance where we were able to share and learn what each of the participating academics is working on. This was especially important for the academics who have recently arrived at the Faculty and who, given the pandemic restrictions, are activities that are increasingly valued,” said the academic.
A similar opinion was held by Dr. Maribet Gamboa, from the Department of Ecology. “As a first instance, the CI2030 bonding event made it possible to bridge the gap between the departments, since it promoted the bond and closeness between the professors by knowing the history of where they come from and the interests of the members. It also gave rise to a free discussion of how together we can attack problems in society. We were able to meet not only the researcher behind a research team, but a person with common interests.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Carolina Quezada from the Department of Environmental Chemistry stated: “Personally, it helped me to know what each of the colleagues present do and offered a relaxed space to interact, exchange ideas and learn about our academic and personal affinities. Spaces like this create a healthy work environment and are conducive to stimulating collaboration and generating new projects, which is why I think they should be held regularly”.
Dr. Sergio Contreras, academic and head of the Department of Environmental Chemistry pointed out the importance of the group perspective to answer complex questions, adding that “The idea of getting together to discuss questions, needs and problems felt is something that excites everyone. restless scientists like the ones we have at the Faculty”.
Dr. María Cristina Yéber, an academic from the UCSC Faculty of Sciences and executive director of the CI2030 initiative, valued the meeting, highlighting the importance of academics getting to know each other, in addition to promoting teamwork.
“In this way, the different investigations are strengthened, since with the ideas that the peers contribute, it is possible to solve those that are already underway or develop new ideas, and with the different perspectives on a problem, it is possible to advance faster in the investigation. solution. In addition, in the conversation, the academics who mainly carry out basic research realize that they can also contribute from their discipline to solve environmental problems”, concluded Dr. Yéber.
