Residents of a New Zealand town are calling for a ban on private fireworks after a fireworks display, paid for by US billionaire Anthony Malkin, sparked the bush fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration, despite the fact that the neighbors warned about the potential risks, reports N.Z. Herald.
The show by the CEO of the Empire State Realty Trust, owner of New York’s tallest building, the Empire State Building, took place despite a plea from local residents concerned about the impact on animal health.
According to the report, Malkin’s celebration sparked three separate fires that spanned nearly 5,000 square feet.
“Fire was obviously our main concern… and it seemed ridiculous to have a commercially based fireworks display. in a rural area“said a neighbor, who preferred to remain anonymous. “But here is a bigger story of someone who has money and seems to be able to do whatever he wants. What they have done is not very respectful of the neighbors. We made it clear from the beginning,” he added.
“It’s just a joke that a foreigner can come and do a 14-minute commercial fireworks show and then burn down the hill,” condemned another neighbor, quoted by Guardian. In fact, his family had to leave their home at that time to safeguard the health of their horses.
“I don’t want to stop people from having fun. I want people to have fun, but in the end, it has to be done in an inclusive and safe way,” he added. He also highlighted that the billionaire did not apologize for the incident. A spokesman for Malkin’s family said he would not comment.
However, according to the New Zealand fire department, to carry out such shows, a special permit is required. “In this case, our staff reviewed the security plan for the event and accepted it,” said one of the employees in response to criticism from local residents.
