15 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Zimbabwean authorities have arrested a total of 25 people this Saturday after the assault on the home of deputy Costa Machingauta, in Budiriro, a southwestern suburb of the capital, Harare, during a meeting of the main opposition party Citizen Coalition for the Change (CCC).

A few months before the presidential elections in Zimbabwe, several arrests have taken place in recent weeks among politicians in opposition to current president Emerson Mnangagwa, who is also running for a second term.

Riot police entered the home of deputy Costa Machingauta in the capital Harare this Saturday. During the intervention, they also arrested another deputy from the CCC party, Amos Chibaya, who was holding a party meeting at that time, according to RFI.

The CCC spokesman, Fadzayi Mahere, has stated that during the assault several agents assaulted the wife and 17-year-old daughter of deputy Machingauta, as well as other detainees.

The Police have justified the operation alleging that said meeting had not been authorized, while the opposition party has accused the Government of using the Police against political adversaries, as the aforementioned medium has revealed.
