A small detachment of Russian vessels belonging to the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy has entered the port of the Venezuelan city of La Guaira, in the north of the country, on Tuesday for a stopover as part of its operations in the Atlantic Ocean.

“A detachment of ships of the Northern Fleet (…) made a business call in the port of La Guaira in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The business call will last for several days, after which the sailors will continue with their assigned tasks,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement reported by TASS.

According to Russian military authorities, the flotilla is made up of the frigate ‘Gorshkov’ and the tanker ‘Pashin’, two of the vessels that made up the flotilla that docked in the Cuban port of Havana in mid-June, so it is assumed that it is the same detachment that is still in Caribbean waters.

The Russian fleet’s stopover in Havana generated some tension at a regional level, especially in the United States, although it is true that both Russia and Cuba insisted at the time that the visit of these vessels did not pose any kind of threat. Washington, for its part, assured that it would monitor the movement of the ships at all times.
