The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, has asked the United Nations on Monday in a speech delivered from New York to suspend Israel’s membership in the organization for repeatedly failing to comply with the resolutions of the General Assembly.
As part of the commemoration for the 75th Nakba Day, which is being held for the first time at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Abbas has questioned how long Israel will remain above international law and enjoy “impunity” for not abide by UN resolutions.
The president of the Palestinian Authority has emphasized the need to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people not only to self-determination, but also to independence, based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital, the news agency has reported WAFA.
Abbas has also assured that the return of the refugees is essential, as well as the release of all Palestinian political prisoners from prisons in Israel. Likewise, he recalled that the Israeli occupation, the policies of colonialism and the blockade in Gaza are the main causes of the spiral of violence in the region.
On the other hand, Abbas took the opportunity to recall that the Western colonizing powers, mainly the United States and the United Kingdom, are “directly responsible”, both politically and morally, for the Nakba, so they have a “historical responsibility” to put an end to the suffering of the Palestinians.
The anniversary day, which is usually accompanied by acts in support of the Palestinians and protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has been officially celebrated since 1998, following a decree by the then Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of these events.
