The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced this Sunday the creation of a “specialized intervention force” to protect the civilian population in the areas under their control within Sudan from any type of abuse that could be committed by criminal gangs or their own troops.
As they explain in a statement published on their Twitter account, this force will comprise 40 units of armed vehicles as part of an initiative that also contemplates the opening of a telephone line for complaints and requests for help.
“This operation has already led to the arrest of criminals who intended to attack public and private institutions. Among the detainees there are individuals who pretended to be part of the RSF,” according to the note, which places special emphasis on the need to prevent the enormous wave of looting that has left a good part of the civilians trapped in the country with nothing.
Likewise, the RSF assures that they are “firmly committed” to the NGOs to describe an “exact panorama” of the “destructive actions of the Sudanese Army and extremists linked to the regime of Omar al Bashir”, the former president of the African country, currently on trial for corruption after his ouster in 2019.
The RSF denounce that elements close to the former president, who ruled the country with an iron fist for 30 years, are infiltrated within the Army.
This accusation, as well as the integration of the paramilitaries into the ranks of the regular Army, was one of the main triggers for the clashes between the RSF and the military that broke out on April 15 and left more than 700 dead and hundreds of thousands dead. of displaced persons until the opening this week of a negotiation process to put an end to the conflict.
“The Sudanese people must not be fooled by the flagrant attempts of these extremists to isolate the RSF, who are firmly committed to their elimination throughout the country,” the paramilitaries conclude.
