“The host profile ranges from retirees, teachers, health workers, we even have students. So there’s a very wide range globally on the platform. But in terms of gender, 55% of our hosts are women, which is fantastic,” Powell said.
In addition to opening their spaces, many women have found another option to create experiences on the platform, be it through tours, classes, or workshops.
Mine, one of the hostesses that the company highlights, points out that she did not earn enough to cover family expenses, so in 2018 she decided to open a space on Airbnb. She says that she has received very diverse travelers, many families who need to cook, with babies and children, people who need a refrigerator to store their medicines.
“There have been guests who have become friends, even from neighbors.” Mine also shares that she is proud that today her 13-year-old son speaks three languages – English, German and Spanish – and can live with people from other regions. And, in addition to receiving travelers, she is resuming her career in Economics and Finance.
Other women, like Araceli, go on a chinampa tour in Tláhuac, where they show attendees how this type of planting is done and then they taste a pre-Hispanic dish.
Powell points out that, in addition to being more thoughtful, women are rated better in the app and therefore end up being superhosts. In data, women received a higher proportion of 5-star ratings (91%) than men (88%).
