BRUSSELS, Jan. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The High Representative of the European Union for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has highlighted the association between the EU and Morocco but has asked to move “from words to deeds” on matters such as the law to combat climate change or the energy crisis to “fulfill commitments” and “make the letters written on paper become something that citizens can perceive in their day to day”.
The vice-president of the European Commission also made these statements at a joint press conference with the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, in the framework of the two-day official visit he is making to the Maghreb country starting this Thursday.
Among the issues discussed by both in their meeting, Borrell has acknowledged that they have addressed allegations of corruption against some members of the European Parliament, with which they have shown “obvious concern”.
“The events are disturbing and the accusations are serious”, pointed out the High Representative, who reiterated that the EU’s position on the matter is “clear” and that “there will be no tolerance for corruption”, while advocating for “wait for the results of the ongoing investigation by the judicial authorities”.
Regarding the association between the EU and Morocco, Borrell stressed that it is “solid and strategic”, based on “common and concrete actions” and that it has gained even “greater importance” in the “difficult times” for the that Europe must now face, with “a war on its borders in the east”, in reference to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
“We consider that Morocco is our most dynamic and closest partner”, Borrell stressed, while admitting that it is “particularly dear to him”, for which reason he has urged sharing a “more ambitious” vision of the agreement between the two that allows fulfill the commitments regarding the structural reforms that Morocco is facing with the accompaniment of the EU.
