See you later, Monty…?
jon hammThe ruthless oil titan appears to have taken its last breath in landmanThe dramatic season finale. After suffering a ruptured aortic aneurysm at the end of episode 9, Monty undergoes emergency open heart surgery and is placed on an oxygen machine while he awaits a heart transplant.
However, it is very implicit that his ticker may have run out before a replacement could be found, as the final shot of Monty sees him failing like his wife Cami (Demi Moore) and his daughters cry on his hospital bed. But, to be fair to Monty, he has survived five heart attacks before. and No one explicitly declared that he was dead, so a sudden and miraculous recovery is expected. technically still on the table. With Monty out of commission, at least for the foreseeable future, if not permanently, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) is promoted to president of M*Tex Oil and executor of the family estate. He is then forced to navigate and help Cami close one last “handover” deal for the company. and handle the increasingly dangerous situation developing with the cartel, all at the same time. No pressure!
After enlisting the help of Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) and Nate (Colm Feore) to get the deal going, Tommy seems to be getting things under control, which, naturally, is when he is kidnapped by Jimenez (Alex Meraz) and the poster. . They try to intimidate him by blowing up an oil tank as revenge for Monty’s stunt with the National Guard, but when Tommy remains his ever-stoic self, they decide to transport him somewhere else to instill more… physical fear in him.
Jimenez then proceeds to perform what can only be described as ASMR torture on Tommy, complete with rattling chains, soft hammer sounds, spilled gasoline, and the quick sound of a nail hitting his upper thigh (oww). When Tommy’s death seems all but assured, everyone’s favorite landowner is saved by a mysterious man, played by Andy Garcia, who kills the other members of the cartel, frees him from his shackles, and raises the idea of peaceful coexistence between the poster and M*. Texas However, it is not immediately clear whether García’s character is another member of the Jiménez cartel or another completely rival group, setting up even more oil and drug dramas to come.
While Tommy initially bristles at the suggestion, it becomes abundantly clear that he may not exactly have the final say in the matter, especially as Garcia reveals that the cartel is also interested in getting into the oil business. The pair of unlikely temporary allies escape before the police arrive, and Tommy hitchhikes home from Dale (James Jordan).

The abused Tommy completes his bad day, no good, very bad, by collapsing on the couch, where he is immediately greeted by his worried wife Angela (Ali Larter), who questions his whereabouts. As breakfast is being prepared, the rest of the family slowly arrives, including Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) and her boyfriend Ryder (Mitchell Slaggert), who, much to Tommy’s chagrin, have stayed the night. He then continues his streak of animal sightings by discovering a baby coyote in his backyard.
Speaking of family, Angela and Ainsley successfully completed their mission to bring the local nursing home to the strip club with some… unique results, thanks to Ainsley volunteering Ryder to work on the residents’ wheelchairs. Ainsley then pays Ryder for his performance later that night, while her mother is still downstairs clarifying the butter, which is… definitely a choice. Many decisions were made.
And, on the other side of the oil fields, Cooper (Jacob Lofland) continues his own quest to make a name for himself, convincing a fellow oilman not to invest in solar energy and work with him. He then shares an emotional moment with his partner Ariana (Paulina Chávez), who is still grieving her late husband.
landman Paramount+ hasn’t officially been greenlit for a second season yet, but its season finale seems to suggest one is on the way based solely on the countless questions left unanswered. Is Monty really dead? Will Tommy be able to close the deal and say goodbye to M*Tex? Do you even want to do it? Have local authorities responded to the huge explosion in the patch? Who takes care of that sweet baby coyote? It looks like we’ll have to wait and see if the series prospers or fails.
