Zelensky and Macron agree that France will train a Ukrainian brigade "in the near future"

September 25 () –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed on Wednesday in New York at the United Nations General Assembly that Paris will train and equip a Ukrainian brigade “in the near future.”

Zelensky thanked France for “its firm support for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the European Union, as well as its military assistance” in the context of the conflict. He also provided Macron with details on the current situation on the front.

The two leaders discussed the “results of recent conferences” based on the Ukrainian peace formula, as well as preparations for a meeting on nuclear security and a second peace summit, the presidency said.

Zelensky on Wednesday defended his peace formula for the country, first proposed almost two years ago, and lamented that in organizations such as the United Nations it is “impossible” to resolve wars “in a fair way” given that it depends “too much” on the UN Security Council, where Russia has veto power.

“Unfortunately, it is impossible to resolve wars fairly and achieve peace within the UN. It is too dependent on the Security Council and when the aggressor exercises its right of veto, the UN remains powerless,” he said during his speech to the UN General Assembly.
