Aug. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Senegal’s armed forces announced Tuesday that they had rescued 76 migrants who were on a boat off the coast of the African country’s capital, Dakar.
The interception was carried out by the offshore patrol vessel WALO. The migrants have been returned to Dakar and handed over to the competent authorities, the Senegalese Navy itself announced on its profile on the social network X.
Journeys between the coast of Senegal and the Canary Islands are frequent, even though the Atlantic route, with strong currents and waves, is considered one of the most dangerous routes to Europe, although in 2023 it saw an increase in the number of movements.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded a 155 percent increase in arrivals to the Canary Islands compared to the previous year, with 15,680 arrivals compared to 39,910.
