"In conflicts we must defend the victim and stop the aggressor"

The president of the Government, Pedro Sanchezhas appeared in the Peace Summit in Switzerland that has brought together more than 100 countries and organizations in a major conference dedicated to establishing a path to peace between Ukraine and Russia.

The president has claimed that he wants to “honor Ukraine in matters of defense of its country” and that “Spain will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary, because there is something clear in this conflict: that there is an aggressor, who is Putin, and a victim, which is the people of Ukraine.

“In all conflicts we must defend the victim and stop the aggressor,” said Sánchez.

The general secretary of the PSOE has also asserted that “a neighboring country You cannot annex a territory that is not yours.”

“We have to send an unequivocal message: that we are united by core values, such as the preservation of the sovereignty of countries” and that international law “must always be preservedand we must defend it forcefully,” Sánchez continued.

The President of the Government continued his appearance and stated that: “We are dealing with some of the global consequences of this conflict, such as a terrible humanitarian crisis; the worsening of a global food crisis, which we already had and which especially harms the weakest; and the fear of the nuclear catastrophe we thought we would never see again.

However, Sánchez has assured that “have actively worked with policies and resources to try to mitigate them.

“Russia blames NATO”

“But there is another serious consequence of this war which is the impact on the international order“, declared the President of the Government.

“Russia is tempted to blame the West or NATO, and although it might claim that it has a security concern about the situation in Europe and that its concerns are legitimate, basic rules must be applied to maintain security, including not invading a neighboring country.

Without international order

Sánchez has continued to indicate that these rules also include not using food not “like a weapon”or nuclear threats, since “they are unacceptable.”

“If we do not defend these norms, there is no international order.” “This is simply not acceptable,” Sánchez continued.

The president began his speech by thanking Switzerland for hosting this peace for Ukraine and recalling that “It’s been more than two years since the Russian military aggression began in the Ukrainian country. “A clear aggression against international law and the principles of the UN Charter, including those of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” stated the Spanish president.

The meeting, which is being held this afternoon in a tourist center near Lucerne, was attended by the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskywhich wants to rally support for the 10-point peace plan it first outlined at the end of 2022.
