Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, affirmed this Sunday that Algeria fulfills “to a great extent” the conditions to join the BRICS -formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa-, and has acknowledged that the country has interest in the group for its economic and political influence.
During an interview with several national media broadcast on various television channels in the country, Tebune assured that membership of the BRICS depends on economic conditions that Algeria meets “to a great extent”, stressing that his country is interested in the group.
“Belonging to the BRICS Group depends on the economic conditions with which Algeria is largely satisfied,” the Algerian president said, according to the Algerian news agency, Algérie Presse Service (APS).
Asked about the possibility of Algeria joining the group, Tebune has maintained that “it is possible”, although he prefers not to get ahead of himself. “What is certain is that there will be good news (…) Algeria is interested in the BRICS, in that they constitute an economic and political power,” the Algerian president detailed.
“Joining this group would make Algeria, a pioneer country of non-alignment, safe from the friction between the two poles,” he added.
