PS2 makes history again in 2024

The PlayStation 2 was launched in 2000 and welcomed what several generations consider to be the step into the future. For more than a decade, Sony’s system made history and as of the latest record (as it competes with Switch) it is the best-selling console of all time. Although its history is behind it, its legacy remains and it recently added another achievement when a prestigious museum included it in its registry as part of the technological history of Japan.

The best-selling console of all time, PlayStation 2made history in 2024 when the renowned National Museum of Nature and Science located in Tokyo, Japan, included it in its recent registry of historical technological pieces that account for Japanese creations in this sector during the 20th century and the years of the 21st century. In general terms, this list, which consists of 380 devices and hardware, recognizes those technological pieces that had an impact on the cultural, social and economic life of people.

It should be noted that this is the first console to be included on this list, as the institution did not consider anything made by Nintendo, SEGA, or any other company that has manufactured video game hardware in Japan over the past few decades.

As stated in the official document which accounts for the inclusion of the PlayStation 2, along with 17 other products (via VGC), the PlayStation 2 was included because it signifies an important moment in technological history and because it gave rise to cultural as well as consumer changes. We know that the PS2 was a worldwide phenomenon that impacted the most important markets.

The PS2 is also recognized on this list from the National Museum of Nature and Science for being one of the first electronic products that popularized the use of DVDs; at the time, it was the cheapest DVD player on the market.

As for its impact on video games, the PS2 is recognized by the institution for its remarkable advances in the graphical field. According to the official description, Sony’s console demonstrated that the graphical limit was no longer in the arcades, but in the consoles, changing the business model.
